In developing countries, tuberculosis is the most frequent infectious complication and cause of death of HIV infection and HIV is associated with tuberculosis in a large proportion of patients. Antiretroviral therapy in generic forms at affordable cost have changed the management of both diseases and induced a need for coordination between National AIDS and TB Programmes, training of health care workers and definition of treatment for co-infected patients. For under-funded teams, mastering complex treatment and side effects and long-term monitoring of patients is a challenge. Some national programmes have addressed this challenge with initial success, as demonstrated by Malawi and Benin, this last country with support from Swiss authorities.
