Maltose in total parenteral nutrition of rats

Six male Wistar rats of about 250 g with a venous catheter implanted got water to drink but no food by mouth. They were fed by vein for 2 weeks on solutions with 25% glucose or with equal energy as maltose, each with amino acids, minerals and vitamins. Rats given glucose maintained bodyweight and excreted little or no glucose in urine. Rats given maltose lost on average a quarter of initial bodyweight and excreted about half the maltose.
