Blood pressure measurement during ergometry makes it possible to investigate the blood pressure behavior during physical effort. It is considered an option for the early detection of arterial hypertension, for the reliable investigation of the efficacy of antihypertensive therapy also under conditions of effort, and for the prognostic assessment of sequelae and cardiovascular events. The method is simple and inexpensive, requires little expenditure of time, and produces readily reproducible results. The submaximal workload range permits a ready differentiation to be made between normotension and hypertension, while at the same time, this workload range mimics everyday bodily effort, and, in principle, can therefore be employed in all patients.
