An investigation of salmonella bacteria in waterfowls and migratory birds in Norway

A total of 935 wild birds and waterfowl (700 passerines, 182 geese and 53 waders) belonging to 53 species in Norway were sampled for the presence of Salmonella spp. using cloacal swabs and analysis of viscera and faeces in 1997-2000. Salmonella spp. was detected in two Canada geese (Branta canadensis) in the Oslo region. Faeces and samples from the passerines and waders were negative for the bacteria. These results indicate that these birds do not represent any great hazard with regard to the spread of salmonellosis to humans.
