In an experiment conducted to determine the antiviral activity of cepharanthine (extracted and purified from Stephania cepharantha) against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in vitro, cepharanthine was applied at 1.56, 3.13, 6.25, 12.50, 25, 50 and 100 micro g/ml. Cepharanthine at 10 micro g/ml showed potent anti-SARS-CoV activities. In vitro tests showed that cepharanthine also had high antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type I at 1.25-6.25 micro g/ml and against Coxsackievirus B3 at 12.5-25.0 micro g/ml.
