To compare the number of postoperative seromas after mastectomy with the use of one or two drainages. Women with malignant tumors who underwent Madden modified radical mastectomy were studied. They were divided into two groups: group A two drainages (axillar and pectoral), group B only one (axillar). For both groups demographical issues, body mass index (BMI = kg/m2), seromas and drainage period were determined. Twenty seven patients were evaluated: group A composed of 12 patients and B composed of 15. Age (years): A 56 +/- 14 vs B 50 +/- 6.5 (p NS), BMI: A 33.2 +/- 3.4 vs B 32.6 +/- 4.5 (p NS); seromas: A 4 vs B 5 (p NS); drainage period: A 23 +/- 6 vs B 24 +/- 7 (p NS). There are no differences in postoperative seroma development in mastectomy wounds with the use of one or two drainages.
