The results of hepatitis E investigations at the Department of Viral Hepatitides, M. P. Chumakov Institute of Poliomyelitis and Viral Encephalitides, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Russia, are presented. The discovery of hepatitis E virus (HEV) resolved the aetiology of the so-called non-A, non-B hepatitis cases with its faecal and oral transmission. The detection of antibodies to HEV among different populations in Russia, suggests that they are frequently detected in the absence of disease notification. The presence of HEV RNA in pigs and wild boars in the country supports the assumption that HEV is transmitted among these animals. The hypothesis that hepatitis E is zoonotic is discussed.
