This paper describes strategic approaches to creating herbal formulations for clinical application (bell curve, individual and pairing). The 3 relationships (additive, synergistic and inhibiting/antagonistic) among herbs in a formula are also described. The roles played by each herb in each formula in the traditional Chinese medicine are categorized, and the 3 primary constituents (vata, pitta and kapha) of the Ayurvedic system of healing are briefly discussed.
