This paper discusses the role and significance of an Occupational Medicine Physician (OMP) in the development, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of an animal research facility occupational health and safety programmes (OHSP), in protecting the worker, workplace and community. The essential elements of an effective OHSP such as the administration; the worker; the workplace; risk assessment; and risk management are discussed.
