Based on some personal results, the writers present comprehensive data on the functional potential of monocytes with respect to their enzymatic equipment, the problem of antibody production, uniformity of their reactions, their evolutional potential, and the connection between morphologic changes in some diseases. Monocytes represent an independent cell system in the body participating in the body defense reactions. The writers consider them to be incompletely matured cells which do not attain full maturity as regards functional capacity until they reach the body tissues. Their functional role is not played in the circulation, but in association with the RES tissue from where they are derived and to where they return again.
