Data were examined for the period January 1994-December 2003 for total prescription dispensed by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for 12 antipsychotic drugs; and reactions reported in the same period to the Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee (Australia). The report rate for side effects was greater for clozapine than for any other second-generation antipyschotic agent. It is suggested that second generation antipsychotic agents cause weight gain and diabetes mellitus more often than older antipsychotic drugs.
