All professionals involved in the care of individuals with diabetes should know how good blood glucose control is assessed and have at least a basic working knowledge of blood glucose management. Nursing intervention opportunities may be missed, or a well-informed diabetes patient may lose confidence in your ability to provide competent nursing care, when statements or actions reflect knowledge gaps in such basics. This article summarizes the principles of management of diabetes required for, but not limited to, the hospital setting.
