Cultures from the sputum of tuberculosis patients who had been receiving antitubercular drugs for >3 months revealed a high percentage of Candida albicans infection. Other isolates obtained were Geotrichum candidum from 2 patients, a chlamydospore forming dematiaceous fungus from 1, Pyrenochaeta romeroi from 1 and Allescheria boydii from 1. When patients with Mycobacterium tuberculosis strs. resistant to at least one drug were treated with hamycin (375 mg/day), after 7 days the resistant strs. became susceptible to antitubercular drugs and the Candida albicans infection disappeared. It is suggested that it would be beneficial to treat patients on long-term antitubercular therapy with an oral antifungal antibiotic such as hamycin to eliminate opportunistic fungi.
