A social worker describes her duties as a counsellor for abortion seekers. The social worker explains all aspects of the abortion operation to the prospective patient, from the anesthesia to the operation itself, before the patient is seen by the physician. The social worker also gives contraceptive counselling. Many of the women have ambivalent feelings toward the abortion or toward the pregnancy. The social worker helps each woman to formulate her thoughts and feelings and to enable her to make an independent decision about undergoing abortion.
