In January 1968, the Museum and Archives of the Menninger Foundation acquired the original four-page manuscript of the preface which Sigmund Freud wrote in German in his own hand for the posthumous collection of papers by the great American neurologist, James Jackson Putnam (1846-1918). The manuscript by Dr. Freud is undated but was probably written in late 1920 since the published version is dated "January 1921." The volume containing the preface was the first publication of The International Psycho-Analytical Library and was published in 1921 by the Hogarth Press of London as Addresses on Psycho-Analysis. The appearance of this volume was most significant since James Putnam did as much as any man in the early days to "obtain a hearing for psycho-analysis in America.
