Sebaceous glands in the esophagus have been reported only in autopsy studies and have been considered of no clinical relevance. We encountered a patient with ectopic sebaceous glands in the middle and lower esophagus, who had symptoms of chronic esophagitis. It is likely that the esophageal sebaceous glands were heterotopic and their relationship to the clinical setting of gastroesophageal reflux was purely fortuitous. Nevertheless, the possibility remains that there is an association between gastroesophageal reflux and the appearance of esophageal sebaceous glands in our case. This possibility should be considered in future evaluation of esophageal biopsy specimens in patients with gastroesophageal reflux.
