The study covered respiratory function in apparently healthy coal miners varying in length of service. Findings were three stages of adaptation: satisfactory (length of service--15 years); boundary, with primary functional strain of bronchi and lungs (length of service--16-20 years); unsatisfactory, with secondary functional strain of bronchi and lungs (length of service over 20 years).
