The Portuguese Interventional Cardiology Registry was created by the Portuguese Society of Cardiology with the aim of documenting prospectively and continually the characteristics of the patients and procedures carried out in Portugal. We studied 5250 patients, from 19 centers, with a mean age of 63 +/- 11 years, 76% male. Twenty-five per cent of the patients had a previous history of acute myocardial infarction, 16.4% of percutaneous angioplasty and 6.7% of coronary artery bypass graft. The procedure was performed for acute myocardial infarction in 18.2%. In total 7685 lesions were treated and 52% of the patients had single-vessel disease. The intervention was multi-vessel in 16%. Stents were implanted in 85.5%, of which 45.1% were direct stenting. In 23% of cases drug-eluting stents were used. Glycoprotein inhibitors were used in 50%. Vascular access was femoral in 98.3%, of which 37% used closure devices. Hospitalization without complications in 90%, with better outcomes in men (90.5% male vs. 86.8% female). Total mortality was 2.2%.
