Reference values necessary for the interpretation of biological surveillance

The paper presents an integrated system if guide values, represented by reference values, action levels, limit values, theoretically able to cover the interpretation of all the data from biological monitoring. This practice, requires in fact accurate values to which refer for demonstrating exposures to xenobiotics, and their early health effect. The procedures to select subjects, to control pre analytical and analytical factors, to apply correct statistical methods for establishing accurate reference values are recalled, and the relationship between the different guide values discussed.
