An analysis is made of the economic activities directly and indirectly related to the tourist industry in the Philippines, and an evaluation made of the future economic contribution of the industry. Survey data was used to calculate tourism's contribution to the Philippine economy in 1978-1979. Input-output analysis was employed to estimate tourism's economic significance, to assess the effect of tourist expenditure on different industries and sectors, and to compute various tourism multipliers. Results indicated that tourism's contribution to GDP, as measured by its income multiplier was 2.22 in 1978 and that tourism employed about 0.94% of the country's workforce. In terms of foreign exchange earnings tourism is one of the top ranking dollar earner industries in the country. The industry's significant backward linkage enables it to induce increased economic activity in other likewise productive sectors of the economy. Its multipliers appear to be relatively significant, pointing to the industry's ability to create income and boost production.
