From 1960 to 1970, 4710 women were admitted to the Zywiec County Hos pital, 2655 for spontaneous abortion and 2055 to have artificial abortio n performed. A significant difference between the age ranges of these 2 groups(chi square = 51.0; p less than .001). Differences were noted in 3 age classes: 21-25 years (U=3.75, p less than .001), 26-30 years (U=2.62, p less than .001), and 31-35 years (U=3.838, p less than .001). Spontaneous abortions prevail in teh 1st group, while in the other 2 groups, artificial abortions are more frequent. In the 3rd group, the number of spontaneous abortions and artificial abortions are almost equal. A high frequency of both types of abortions was noted in the middle group (26-30).
