The Girl Child: health status in the post-Independence period

This article briefly describes the declining sex ratio (lesser females than males) and the degraded status of girls in India, in the post-independence period. It also discusses early childhood care, malnutrition, early pregnancy and motherhood, violence implications, incidence of sexually transmitted diseases, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), child labour, and health services, programmes and policies to improve the quality of life of girls.
