1. One thousand and twenty-seven mentally retarded individuals admitted in various institutions for the mentally retardates in several states in India were screened for PKU by the use of ferric chloride, dinitrophenylhydrazine and phenistix paper tests on urine. 2. No case of PKU was detected in this investigation. 3. Since this is a rare inborn error of metabolism, a larger number of cases, particularly newborns, will require to be tested to get an idea of its incidence.
