This joint UNU/IPPF Seminar, convened at the request of several French-speaking African countries, had as its objectives: (1) to identify nutrition improvement programmes which could be integrated into family planning activities; (2) identify family planning activities and programmes which could be integrated into nutrition education and services; (3) devize strategies for implementing these integrated programmes in French-speaking Africa; (4) sketching the broad outlines of a pilot project and a series of programmes suitable for selected countries. Participants were invited to describe family planning and nutrition programmes in their own countries, indicating particularly which of these were integrated or co-ordinated, or which showed potential for being integrated. The plans outlined in (4) above were based on data from these reports and advice from nutrition and family planning experts: Altogether 13 national reports were presented (from Algeria, Benin, Haiti, Upper Volta, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, Rwanda, Senegal, Togo, Tunisia and Zaire). Three further communications provided further information for the participants, two from F. T. Sai on (a) Programme planning as an integral part of overall mother and baby health programmes, and (b) influence of fertility and mother's nutrition on the child's early years, and one from M. M. Bourne on integration of nutrition and family planning programmes and projects.
