Low uptake of postnatal care services in Swaziland

A survey was undertaken in two maternity centers in Swaziland to identify factors associated with low use of postnatal care services during early pueperium. A quantitative descriptive nonexperimental study design with purposive sampling was used. Fifty recuperating clients who visited public postnatal care services participated in a face-to-face interviews. The study reported that the main factor responsible for low uptake of early postnatal care services was socio-cultural. Other deterrents were personal, economic and health service factors. Recommendations were made to policy makers, midwifery training institutions and health-care institutions regarding the provision of quality, equitable, culturally acceptable postnatal care services to all mothers.
