Structural violence, poverty and the AIDS pandemic

This paper addresses the linkage among poverty, gender inequality and HIV risk, the worsening of poverty due to the HIV pandemic, and the lack of access of poor people to active antiretroviral therapy. The connection of structural violence with a large variety of factors, including economic deprivation, gender inequality and lack of opportunity for education and work, and the influence of migrant labour in increasing the risk of contracting HIV and inefficiency of disease prevention strategies are discussed. It is suggested that without funding to address the economic and educational opportunities, the epidemic can only continue.
