This letter briefly describes the reduction in malaria incidence in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa during 2001-02, made possible through effective house-spraying with insecticides. DDT is reintroduced for house-spraying in 2000 after the discovery of pyrethroid-resistant, but DDT-sensitive, Anopheles funestus mosquitoes. In addition, the introduction of artemether and lumefantrine (Coartem) to treat malaria has also contributed to the decline in malaria incidence.
