Tribal fertility in India: socio-cultural influences on demographic behaviour

An evaluation of fertility differences between tribal and religious groups (Hindus) in India, based on census data and reports from 1881-1931 is presented. It aims to provide important insights into how different patterns of tribal demographic behaviour (according to religious and marriage practices and rituals, female status autonomy, classification and differentiation among various tribal groups and clans, and economic circumstances and predicaments) can be attributed to socio-cultural differences.
