African-American women represent 56 percent of AIDS cases reported in women, and the prevalence rate of AIDS cases among African-American women is 16 times higher than among white women. A Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation survey shows that African-American women consider AIDS the most pressing health problem in the Nation, with 46 percent of women saying AIDS is a more urgent problem now than it was a few years ago. Fifty percent of the women surveyed know someone who has AIDS, who has died of AIDS, or who is HIV-positive. More than two-thirds are concerned about their children becoming infected. Other statistics regarding African-American women and HIV-related issues are presented.
