Sudden death in periparturient sheep associated with Clostridium sordellii

The factors that were in common to 30 ewes (out of 140) presented to a disease surveillance centre in Thurso, UK, between 2000 and 2003, are described. These include medical history, clinical presentations and rearing conditions of the lamb. Upon submission to the center, the carcasses were rapidly decomposing, with some presenting bloat, swollen vulva, retained palcenta, severe metritis, uterine discharge, septicaemia and toxaemia. Laboratory examinations revealed the presence of Clostridium sordelli. Also, the prevalence, pathogenesis and clinical aspects of C. sordelli infection, including measures of preventing this disease (like vaccination, drug therapy or environmental control), are discussed.
