Nervous complications in the course of penicillin therapy

Three cases of acute transitory encephalopathy in the course of penicillin treatment, are reported. The first two patients suffered from acute purulent meningitis, treated with massivo doses of Penicillin G. The third cases was a child with streptococcal (scarlet fever) and staphylococcal infection, treated with Oxacillin,and Moldamin. In the firct two cases the encephalic disturbances were of toxic nature the encephalic syndrome rapidly disappearing when the amount of Penicillin was lowered. In the third case in which moderate doses were administered, the pathogeny was more complex, the nervous disturbances being caused by allergy to penicillin and disappearing only after complete elimination of the antibiotic from the organism.
