Two hypotheses about preeclampsia: endothelium injury and inflammation

The paper is a survey of literature on the two hypotheses about preeclampsia: a) one according to which the endothelium injury is a key complication; b) another one according to which the injury is a side effect of inflammation and adhesive reaction. Those reactions consist in the activation of the endothelium and activation of blood platelets, as well as activation of neutrophils and monocytes/macrophages. That complex activation is induced by cytokines and integrins from the placenta, deported cytotrophoblast and procoagulant debris of the trophoblast. The two hypotheses are complementary rather than competitive.
