A case is reported in a 32-year-old man from France, with a history of giardiasis successfully treated with metronidazole in 1991, who presented in 2002 with a nine year history of digestive symptoms including hypogastric pain and diarrhoea. A rectosigmoidoscopy demonstrated erythemato-congestive rectal mucus and superficial ulcerations. Examination of a biopsy sample of ulcerated rectal tissue demonstrated trophozoites. The patient was successfully treated with metronidazole (1.5 g/day for 10 days).
