The following thematic areas where research can play a pivotal role in ensuring food security in sub-Saharan Africa are discussed: reducing poverty and improving productivity; enhancing the economic benefits/impact from research; enhancing the role of biotechnology in food security; expanding income diversification; and assisting to minimize the social costs of HIV/AIDS. The response of the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) to some of the food security challenges are then discussed.
