Three root zones were discovered in relation to rice root exudations and their decomposition products. The first was the most oxidized root zone (0-1.5 mm), which contained the highest number of aerobic diazotrophic microorganisms, followed by the reduced zone (1.5-4.5 mm), where their quantity was decreased and numbers of anaerobic nitrogen-fixing bacteria were maximum, and the reducing zone (4.5-7.5 mm), in which aerobic, obligate and facultative anaerobic bacteria coexisted.
