Review of breast cancer cases in Jaipur region

During 1990, a total of 200 cases of pathologically-confirmed breast malignancies were diagnosed at the Birla Cancer Institute SMS Hospital in Jaipur, India. This accounted for 8.30% of total cancers and 19.40% of all cancers that occurred in women. Majority of patients were in the age group 45-54 years (37.0%) and 35-44 years (24.5%). Only 13.5% of cases occurred in women below 35 years. Majority of the patients (97.50%) were married, of whom 76.0% got married below the age of 20 years. Most patients had their menarche between 13 and 16 years of age. Menstrual irregularities were reported by 17.50% of patients. 33.5% of patients had more than 6 pregnancies, whereas 50.50% had 3-5 pregnancies. Majority of the women (68.50%) had their first child between 18 and 25 years and 13.50% had their first-born below 18 years. Majority reported having breastfed their children for 1-2 years. A family history of cancer was present in 10.0% of cases. 22.5% of cases sought medical help within a week after detection of the breast lump, whereas 6.0% had delayed consultation. Further epidemiological studies are needed to elucidate correlations between different risk factors and breast cancer incidence in India.
