The prescribing practices of 354 physicians were studied between February and April 1998. An average of 4.51 drugs were prescribed per prescription and the average daily cost of prescribed drugs was Rs 133.41. Antimicrobials, vitamins, minerals and injectable drugs were over-prescribed. About half of the prescribed drugs were found in the National Essential Drugs List of Pakistan and only about 12% were prescribed using their generic names. It its concluded that the prescribing practices of physicians in Karachi are liberal.
