Lung puncture aspirate and blood culture taken immediately after death in malnourished children

Blood and lung cultures were made a few minutes after death in an unselected group of malnourished children. Significant organisms were recovered in 55% of the children, 70% of the organisms being classed as Gram-negative. The importance of Gram-negative bacteriaemia in protein-calorie malnutrition is discussed.
