In this paper, the normal physiology of calcium metabolism and its role in bone mineralization are reviewed. The calcium requirements of children are discussed together with the factors affecting adequate calcium intake. An overview on the clinical assessment of a child's calcium status is provided. Recommendations on improving a child's calcium intake are also discussed.
