The annual child mortality in the world from rotavirus infections is estimated to be 650 000. An American oral vaccine introduced in 1998 was withdrawn in 1999; the use of this vaccine is being reconsidered. Other vaccines are undergoing trials but are unlikely to be available for 4-5 years.
