The quest to sequence the genome of the Norway brown rat has spurred an unusual partnership. The U.S. government has put forward $60 million to have 3 labs--one academic center and 2 private companies--race ahead in sequencing the rat genome, with a draft sequence containing 90 percent or more of the functional genetic information expected by 2003. This public-private coalition brings together scientists who were competitors until a few weeks ago and allows them to combine their techniques.
