Pars plana vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane secondary to cat scratch neuroretinitis

A case of epiretinal membrane (ERM) formation related to cat scratch neuroretinitis is reported in a 19-year-old man from California, USA. He had a 2-month history of painful decreased vision in the left eye. He had been scratched by a cat approximately 4 months prior to his visual symptoms and raised IgM and IgG tires against Bartonella henselae were recorded. The patient was given erythromycin for 6 weeks. A pars plana vitrectomy with membrane peeling was performed. 18 months after surgery, vision remained 20/25 in the left eye. Retinal exudates, retinal oedema and disk elevation resolved. No recurrent ERM has developed.
