Two letters comment on Plous and Herzog's assessment in the July 27 issue of the reliability of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). One letter calls the major premises and conclusions of the study into question. The second letter expresses the belief and hope that, over time, ethical principles based on consensus will emerge and be embraced by the research community in general. A reply is published.
