Under general anaesthesia a special trocar is passed from an external jugular vein under the skin to emerge on the midline of the back between the scapulae. A polyvinyl cannula is inserted into the dorsal opening of the trocar, passed through the latter and introduced into the vein, where it is immobilized by ligatures. A three-way plastic tap is fitted to the cannula where it emerges from the pig's back. The projecting portion of the cannula and the tap are protected by a canvas square secured in position by tapes. Blood can be withdrawn without causing the animal discomfort, by means of a syringe and length of tubing attached to the tap.
