Girls (129 in all) aged from 13 to 17 years, boarding-school inmates, were observed for a period of from 1.5 to 2 months; 17 of these girls were at the prepubertal stage, 9 had a temporary amenorrhea after menarche, and 103 had menstruation. A total of 251 cycles were traced in the menstruating girls. Rectal temperature was measured daily; vaginal smears were examined and pregnandiol and estrogen excretion in the 24-hour urine was determined once a week. Formation of basal temperature in girls started before the menarche, this being indicated by a periodic fall of the temperature by 0.3-0.8° C. The following types of temperature curves were revealed in the menstruating girls: monophasic, alternating, incomplete biphasic and biphasic. The character of basal temperature coincided with the excretion of sex hormones, indices of hormonal colpocytology and reflected the extent of maturity of the sexual system in girls.
