Inventories of urban street trees and shrubs were made in Iztacalco and Iztapalapa, Federal District , Mexico. Thirteen neighbourhoods and 3190 trees were sampled in Iztacalco over 28.9 km, and 22 neighborhoods and 5436 trees in Iztapalapa over 47.28 km. Each tree or shrub was identified taxonomically, and quantitative characteristics were evaluated (diameter (DBH) total height, location, available space for plant growth) and also some qualitative characteristics (health, physical condition of stem and foliage, age class, pruning type, and pavement damage). In Iztacalco 68 different trees and shrubs species were identified; the most frequently occurring species were Fraxinus uhdei (16.83%), Ligustrum lucidum (13.73%), and Cupressus lindleyi (13.44%). In Iztapalapa 81 trees and shrubs species were identified; the most frequently occurring were Ligustrum lucidum (9.95%), Cupressus lindleyi (9.47%), Fraxinus uhdei (8.74%), Jacaranda mimosifolia (8.43%), and Erythrina coralloides (7.27%). The average DBH was 13.6 cm in Iztacalco, and 11.5 cm in Iztapalapa; the average total height was 3.10 m and 3.9 m respectively. Both locations had a high percentage of trees with good stem and foliage health conditions. A high percentage of trees had not been pruned and a high percentage were causing no damage to pavements.
