54 fertile women taking oral contraceptives for up to 4 1/2 years were compared with a similar unmedicated group. Statistically the groups differed significantly, with leucin amino peptidase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase significantly elevated in the 1st group. 11 other women on the same oral contraceptive were examined and found to have increased alkaline liver/cholan-phospho-estrase activity along with a decrease in iso-enzymes of ossarous origin. This type of enzyme activity is characteristic of a mild cholesteric reaction of the liver, and healthy women taking oral contraceptives almost regularly develop this particular serum enzyme constellation.
