A randomized survey was carried out in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts in Andhra Pradesh, India, to determine the consumption patterns for fruits and fruit products in the cosmopolitan region. 240 households from the middle-income group (MIG; household income, Rs 10 000-20 000/month) and high-income group (HIG; household income, >Rs 20 000/month). 240 households (120 for each group) were selected. Results showed that both groups consumed 2 or more types of fruits everyday available during the season. Less importance was given to dry fruits and fruit products compared to fresh fruits. Relatively higher quantities of fruits were consumed by HIG respondents (78.2 g/capita/day) compared to MIG (67.5 g/capita/day) which may be due to their higher purchasing power and awareness regarding the nutritional values of fruits. However, these values are lower than the recommendations of the National Institute of Nutrition (100 g/capita/day).
