The importance of irrigation in the spread of various diseases is considered. Irrigation development in Zanzibar is discussed and the diseases prevalent there are discussed with reference to the effects of irrigation management especially of rice in providing breeding sites for those diseases and their vectors. Improvements in irrigation systems which might help to control diseases include the use of siphons rather than filling header ditches with earth banks, avoidance of borrow pits, provision of pumping stations, measuring the amounts of water used and the use of intermittent irrigation rather than continuous flooding.
