Filariasis in the District of Ghazipur (Uttar Pradesh)

Filariasis surveys were made in the district of Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, India, between April 1958 and April 1960. The infection is due to Wuchereria bancrofti and transmitted by Culex fatigans . For 11, 212 persons of various ages and each sex from rural areas (representing 2.4% of the population) the microfilaria, disease and endemicity rates were 7.60%, 8.98% and 16.01% respectively. For 1, 838 persons from urban areas (representing 6.4% of the population) the corresponding figures were 9.84%, 6.96% and 16.32%. Hydrocde was the commonest clinical manifestation, the next commonest being elephantiasis of the legs.
